Novelist Brad Meltzer, who shook up The Justice League with the controversial Identity Crisis, reboots DC’s iconic super-group with Justice League of America #0. Using a literary device that takes readers from the past to the future and back again, Meltzer touches on a number of crucial JLA moments, such as Red Tornado’s suicide mission and the group’s “secret origin” story (when The JLA members were turned into trees).
The issue boasts an “all-star cast of artists,” which gives key creators a chance to revisit some of their finest moments. For example, Kevin Maguire illustrates the retelling of Batman’s famous one-punch KO of Guy Gardner, while George Pérez handles Donna Troy’s wedding. Using so many artists and flashbacks (as well as flashforwards) throughout the story can make for a disjointed reading experience (especially for the proverbial new reader), but Meltzer’s tidy scripting manages to hold things together pretty well.
Best of all, the issue provides an excellent launch pad for the new ongoing series by reestablishing the friendships of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.
