Drawn from the mid–seventies monster title, everybody’s favorite green monster reemerged in 1982 in The Saga of Swamp Thing (eventually changing its name to Swamp Thing with issue #39). This series is the story of Dr. Alec Holland, a biochemist who was immolated by his own chemicals. Trying to save himself, he dove into a swamp, where the burning chemicals interacted with the vegetation in the bog and turned the mild-mannered scientist into the grotesque monster and pitiful hero known as Swamp Thing.
In the years since this title’s premiere, it has grown from a monster book into a more mature comic, drawing on weird and sometimes beautiful themes of a more adult nature.
