In the age of the atom, more and more children were being born with strange abilities that set them apart from the rest of humanity. These people were known as mutants, and Professor Charles Xavier decided that he must make it his mission to shelter these mutants from society’s fears, and to teach them to use their abilities for the good of mankind. Thus, he gathered together the heroes that would become known as the X-Men.
The original X-Men (Cyclops, the Beast, the Angel, and Marvel Girl) were eventually replaced by a new team in Giant Size X-Men #1. That team, which added members Thunderbird, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Banshee, Storm, and Wolverine, would become a comic book sensation.
Readers should note that with issue #142, this series, originally known simply as X-Men (1st Series), changed its name officially to “The Uncanny X-Men.”
