Driven by a paranoid media and the destruction caused by evil mutants, anti-mutant hysteria seemed to be growing with every day. And even though heroes such as the Uncanny X-Men were themselves mutants, there was a national movement on to require mutant registration, and a clampdown on anyone the government deemed “dangerous.”
To shelter newly discovered mutants in a world that subjected them to such unreasoning hatred, the original members of The Uncanny X-Men conceived of a plan: go undercover as a “mutant exterminator force,” and then spirit the mutants away to safety. Dubbing themselves X-Factor, this company could simultaneously charge the mutant-phobes for its service, and use that fear for constructive ends. Now only seldom working under that pretense, X-Factor has become a well-known group of super-heroes, rivaled only by the X-Men and X-Force.
