Suppose that there were a villain so evil that Captain Nemo, Alan Quartermain, Dr. Henry Jekyll, John Griffin (the Invisible Man), and Miss Mina Harker (the only survivor of Bram Stoker’s Dracula) came together to defeat him. They are the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The League is hot on the heels of the Oriental menace, Dr. Fu Manchu, who could destroy the Empire if left unchecked. Numerous references to “cavorite” (an antigravity substance created by H. G. Wells) and Mycroft Holmes (the brother of Sherlock Holmes) only add to the period feel of this masterwork. As a matter of fact, Alan Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta) and Kevin O’Neill (Judge Dredd) manage to include some element from just about every piece of English fiction there is.
In addition to the story, there are also period advertisements and a few pages of fiction by Alan Moore entitled “Alan and the Sundered Veil.”
